Results Announced for the 2008 Na Mele O Maui Student Art Competition

WAILUKU, HI – Art by Tiffany Suh, senior at Baldwin High School, was selected Best of Show and First Place in the Division II, Two-Dimensional Art category for the 2008 Nä Mele O Maui Student Art Competition.

“Tiffany really captured the essence of this year’s theme plus she artistically executed great use of watercolor which is a challenging medium to work with,” said Albert Molina, ceramists and 2008 art judge.

This year’s theme, The Golden Age of Hawaiian Music, featured original artwork of the romantic 1930s and 1940s in Hawai’i. While students could portray any aspect of this time period, many included Boat Days, modern hula, lei sellers, and big bands and orchestras.

Two-and-three dimensional artwork were submitted by students from Baldwin, Kamehameha, Lahainaluna, Maui and Maui Preparatory high school students, grades 9 – 12.

Judging took place at the Department of Education, Maui District Office located at the State Building in Wailuku. This year’s judges included Rob DeCamp, Albert Molina and Bonnie Friedman.

“It’s amazing how good these kids are, operating at a professional level,” said Rob DeCamp, professional photographer and 2008 Na Mele O Maui art judge.

“Expressing how you see the world or how you want to see the world is a good way to show your point of view,” said Bonnie Friedman. “We hope more and more students will continue to enter the Na Mele O Maui Art Competition.”
