17 Jun Kā’anapali Beach Hotel Cultural Activities at their Hale Hoʻokipa
Immerse yourself in Hawaiian culture daily at Kā’anapali Beach Hotel’s Hale Hoʻokipa. The cultural activities are offered daily at 8:30 AM, 10:00AM, 11:30AM, 1:00PM, 2:30PM, 3:30PM and are complimentary or at a nominal fee to hotel guests. Just stop by and sign up in advance at the Hale Hoʻokipa in the lobby 7:30am – 5:30pm or you may call (808) 667-0161.
HULA (DANCE) You will walk away from this class knowing that the hula is more than just a Hawaiian form of dance. Learn the importance of hula in preserving the culture, language, history and stories of Hawaiʻi. Guests of all abilities are invited to join!
*Limited class sizes. Advance sign-up required. All keiki (children) 12 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Non-hotel guests can sign up for Hawaiian cultural activities at $20 per class.
KAPA (CLOTH-MAKING Learn how cloth was made and see the plants that were used. You will experience the process from beginning to end and learn about the different tools used to make kapa. You will then get the chance to decorate a piece to take home, using traditional stamps and dyes.
LEI MAKING (ADORNMENTS) Learn about the different lei making styles. You will gain knowledge about the significance of a lei, traditional uses and gathering protocols. You might even collect lei materials on property and learn to fashion them into your own lei to take away.
MAHI’AI (HAWAIIAN FARMING) You will learn Hawaiian terminology associated with plants and farming, the mannerisms of food cultivation and preparation, the spiritual connection with Hawaiian food plants, and participate in the processing and production of traditional foods.
MEA HO’OKANI (HULA INSTRUMENTS) You will get the opportunity to see and try out different Hawaiian musical instruments. And you will learn when, why and how each was used as well as how each was made. Best of all, you get to make a instrument to take home!
MELE (MUSIC AND UKULELE) Learn about Hawaiian music and songs. You will learn a few chords on the ‘ukulele and Hawaiian words in a mele (song). The history of the development of Hawaiian music will also be covered with examples of ancient and contemporary songs. No previous experience is required to participate.
MO’OLELO (STORYTELLING) You will learn about Maui, Hawaiian culture, spirituality and language through talk story with our Hawaiian Cultural Alakaʻi (Guide). You are welcome to bring questions and be involved in conversation.
ʻŌLELO (HAWAIIAN LANGUAGE) You will learn the correct pronunciation of Hawaiian alphabet and learn some common words and sentences. Throughout the class, you will also learn the history of the near extinction and revitalization of our native language.
HOʻOLAULE’A (MUSIC PERFORMANCE) Join the Hale Hoʻokipa staff in the lobby in a music session where everyone, of any ability, is invited to play music, dance hula, or just sing along. Instruments can be borrowed from our staff, or feel free to bring your own.
MAʻAWE (NATIVE FIBERS) You will learn how fiber was collected from native plants to utilize in every day life and will have an opportunity to make a unique item to take home.
KILOMOANA (OCEAN OBSERVATIONS) See what the beach boys are doing and be prepared to jump in on the hands-on activity. The activities may include repairing canoes and other ocean-going gear, rigging, and throw net. You are invited to ask questions and participate along with our staff.
