Thousands of Fresh Orchids Rain Onto Guests At The Westin Maui Resort & Spa

The Westin Maui Resort & Spa celebrated Fourth of July with an eco-friendly touch! Sixty thousand (60,000) fresh orchids in shades of white and purple were showered onto hundreds of resort guests earlier today from a Blue Hawaiian helicopter as it hovered above the resort’s aquatic playground overlooking Ka’anapali Beach.

An annual tradition observed every Fourth of July for over a decade, the unique Flower Shower creates an unusual buzz of excitement. The environmental–friendly activity promotes a clean and smokeless “flowerworks” alternative to the usual fireworks and emphasizes the importance of environmental sustainability and caring for the planet.

Adding a cultural touch, the resort held a Lei Making session immediately after the flower drop for guests to make fresh leis using the flowers they gathered to present their token of love to their families and friends. A festive floor to ceiling photo screen crafted with balloons in patriotic colors made the perfect backdrop for families and friends to snap photos with their beautiful leis.

First time visitors to Maui, Scott Butcher and his family enjoyed spending their Fourth of July vacation at the resort. “The flower drop was very creative and a cool idea,” said Scott. His wife Jean initially thought that there would be several persons sprinkling flowers from the upper pool deck area and was delightfully surprised when flowers dropped from the sky. Hailing from Austin, Texas, the couple added that their two girls Maddie and Emery are enjoying their island stay.

Local resident Kim Villanueva took the opportunity to indulge in a family staycation at The Westin Maui Resort & Spa. Joined by her spouse Sean and children Atticus and Anias as well as her mother Beth, they spent time making fresh flower leis from the orchids they gathered during the flower drop.

Festivities began early in the morning with Beach Ball Extravaganza where the resort’s pools were decorated with over a thousand beach balls of different shapes and in colors of red, blue and white. There were also swan and flamingo- shaped pool floats to depict the resort’s wildlife as well as four resort associates in mermaid costumes who were a hit with children and adults alike as they swam and played with guests.

The Westin Maui Resort & Spa also introduced a new feature to its annual festivities by having two female aerial artists perform a dangling rope act at the resort’s pool deck area. The pool and beach lawn party continued all day with games for all age groups such as hula hoops, pie and watermelon eating contests.

Barbeque favorites and delicious Fourth of July specials were served in beachfront tents on the resort’s Ocean Lawn including BBQ Beef Ribs, Hawaiian-Style Street Corn, Foot-Long Hot Dog, Pork Sliders and refreshing Root Beer Floats.
