Stand Up Paddle Is All The Rage

It intrigues me how what is old always becomes new. Take my bell bottoms and peace signs, for example. In my world they’re long gone, however today, they’re all the rage. Who would have thunk?

Same goes for the exciting sport of Stand Up Paddle, or commonly called SUP by “those in the know.” It looks so easy, even a travel writer from Dallas seems to be able to do it. WOW! Check out what you can do after one lesson… Way to go Paul!

Back in the good ole days, growing up in Southern California, paddle boarding was popular. We would take our giant longboards and paddle around in the bays and in the calm. We would stand up and pretend to be surfers, while the real surfers were out in the waves. We would also use a paddle with our boards, but in a sitting position. Who would know that Stand Up Paddling would become so popular?

When speaking with surfers past their prime, who stand up, they say they love this, cause they don’t have to get up and down from a supine position! Makes sense to me. You’re already up! Such a deal… And also a great core workout for those really wanting to get into it.

We recommend that you take a lesson. There are many qualified outlets along Ka’anapali Beach through the hotel Beach Activity Centers. Beach Activities of Maui is a great vendor to try. You’ll be assigned a well trained professional, who will give you the basics from step one.

They’ll introduce you to the equipment and discuss your comfort level in the water. Hopefully they’ll crack a few jokes and get you relaxed enough that you’ll feel confident and ready to get out there and tear it up. Many will have you start in a kneeling position, just to acclimate you to the concept of being above the water, which can be a quite odd.
Once your instructor thinks that you’re ready to get wet, he’ll want to play “follow the leader…
And before you know it…
