Surfboard Across America Tour Visited the Plains: It was Hawaiian night at Auburn’s contest against Texas A&M on Wednesday in celebration of the Tigers receiving their custom 2018 Maui Jim Maui Invitational surfboard. More than 7,600 fans were on hand to catch the eighth-ranked Tigers in an exciting SEC showdown against the Aggies. Auburn’s mascot, Aubie, and members of the spirit squad showcased the Tigers’ surfboard during the first half on Wednesday, with many members of the Auburn Jungle, the Tigers’ student section, decked out in Hawaiian shirts to complete the gameday theme. Auburn used a little Maui Magic to rally from a 17-point second-half deficit, but could not complete the comeback in a one-point defeat. Despite the loss, Auburn remains atop the SEC standings with a 9-2 mark in conference play and 21-3 overall record this season.
In December 1982, then No. 1 ranked Virginia, led by National College Player of the Year Ralph Sampson, played little-known NAIA Chaminade University in Honolulu while on the way back from a trip to Tokyo. The Silverswords stunned Virginia 77-72 in one of the greatest upsets in college basketball history.
Two years later, in 1984, Chaminade University hosted the first Maui Jim Maui Invitational and it has proven to be the premier early-season college basketball tournament for 34 years running. Each year, the Maui Jim Maui Invitational attracts the top programs, best-known coaches and most outstanding players to compete in an exciting atmosphere at the Lahaina Civic Center near the beautiful beaches of Maui.
